Carl Sagan | "Wanderers"

From A Tribute to Carl Sagan:

"For all it's material advantages, the sedentery life has left us edgy, unfulfilled.
The open road still softly calls, like a nearly forgotten song of childhood..."

Astronomy Pic of the Day | Galaxies Collide

Posted on 10:03 by Unknown
Not even a hint of a new job in today's emails. But there was this great image from NASA.

The Antennae galaxies, located about 62 million light years from Earth, are shown in this composite image from the Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue), the Hubble Space Telescope (gold), and the Spitzer Space Telescope (red).

The collision, which began more than 100 million years ago and is still occurring, has triggered the formation of millions of stars in clouds of dusts and gas in the galaxies. The most massive of these young stars have already sped through their evolution in a few million years and exploded as supernovas.

The X-ray image from Chandra shows huge clouds of hot, interstellar gas that have been injected with rich deposits of elements from supernova explosions. This enriched gas, which includes elements such as oxygen, iron, magnesium and silicon, will be incorporated into new generations of stars and planets. The bright, point-like sources in the image are produced by material falling onto black holes and neutron stars that are remnants of the massive stars. Some of these black holes may have masses that are almost one hundred times that of the Sun.

Astronomy Pic of the Day - Trifid Nebula

Posted on 11:01 by Unknown

Stars and dust in the Trifid Nebula

Unspeakable beauty and unimaginable bedlam can be found together in the Trifid Nebula. Also known as M20, this photogenic nebula is visible with good binoculars towards the constellation of Sagittarius. The energetic processes of star formation create not only the colors but the chaos. The red-glowing gas results from high-energy starlight striking interstellar hydrogen gas. The dark dust filaments that lace M20 were created in the atmospheres of cool giant stars and in the debris from supernovae explosions...

Nasa scientists discover evidence That Alien Life Exists On Saturn's Moon Titan

Posted on 15:54 by Unknown
Would you even need to say "alien life" if you're talking about life on another planet(or moon)?
Anyway, I'll bet they're wrong.

Titan: Nasa scientists discover evidence 'that alien life exists on Saturn's moon'

Titan: Artist's impression

But I hope they're right.

Tire Tracks, Empty Planet

Posted on 07:43 by Unknown
More from Mars. Martian Rover Opportunity's tire tracks traverse a vast Martian plain of dunes:

Last week Opportunity surpassed Viking 1 as the longest running mission on Mars, now extending well over six years. Landing in 2004 in Meridiani Planum, the robotic Opportunity has embarked on its longest and most dangerous trek yet, now aiming to reach large Endeavor Crater sometime next year.

Weekend Astronomy Pics| Titan and The Hubble Ultra-Deep

Posted on 16:06 by Unknown
Saturday night's a good time for some classic space pics don't you think? Here's two of my favorites:
The Hubble "Ultra-Deep Field image" is one my top astronomy pics of all time. Millions of galaxies in a small slice of sky. The lights you see are galaxies with billions of stars in each. Many are easily recognizable as galaxies but many aren't, back into the infinite.

And other worlds; The surface of Titan.

Astronomy Pic of the Day | Dust Clouds In Orion

Posted on 17:17 by Unknown
And news of a job!
Logging on for just a moment.
I've been working a full time job. It's just office work, etc. at the local senior citizen's center, but it is full time so I'm now there a lot. My sparse posting lately may be even sparser at times now. This job will do while I continue to look for that good "dream" job:-) I've also been seriously looking into getting a Realtor's license while I look for the dream job. This day and time dream jobs are like lottery winners, few and far between.
Anyhoo I'll be on as much as I can, will keep up with the news and you do the same. It's ALMOST time for March Madness!
And how 'bout my sen. Jim Bunning(R, Asshat)? What a Dickcard, 'ey?

Here's my astronomy pic o' the day:

"..The same type of scattering that colors the daytime sky further enhances the blue color. M78 is about five light-years across and visible through a small telescope. M78 appears above only as it was 1600 years ago, however, because that is how long it takes light to go from there to here. M78 belongs to the larger Orion Molecular Cloud Complex that contains the Great Nebula in Orion and the Horsehead Nebula."
